Topic: Mail server problem

After I have got a new ip-adress  a month ago from my ISP, i have not recieved any emails.

I have corrected the ip-adress in DNS, and i use my ISP's baxkup-mx server. Homepage is running fine, but when i look at dnsreport.com, my mail server does answer.

Shall i open port 25, and i so, how ?

Check the reverse dns entry fory mail server. Looking at your domain in dns report. the reverse dns entry doesn't point at your ip.

Frem dnsreport.com i get on reverse DNS:
109.77.160.80.in-addr.arpa backup-mx.post.tele.dk. [TTL=21294]

It looks OK, as my ip is 87.57.208.74

You have provided very little information. Try answering these questions:

- confirm sme release?
- confirm server config: server-gateway, server-only?
- how do you connect to the Internet: ADSL, cable, router, firewall, other?
- is e-mail working internally for send/receive to local accounts?
- is e-mail working for sending outbound?
- anything unique in your setup?
- what contribs are installed?
- what does the log show:
 # tail -f /var/log/qpsmtpd/current | tai64nlocal
- what's your base smtp config settings:
 # config show smtpd; config show qpsmtpd

- SME release 7.0, fully updated
- Servergateway
- ADSL with 1 regular ip-adress. SME with 2 netcards, connected to the adsl-modem, works as router and dhcp server on local network
- I can send and recieve e-mails fine on local network
- I can send e-mails outside in the world
- I don't think anything unique is on my setup. it have worked fine for the past 9 months, but there was a cable-breakdown somewhere between me and the ISP. They fixed it after 18 days, giving me a new ip-adress. Homepage and everything else works fine, only the reception of emails is not working.
- awstats web statitics and phpsysinfo. They work fine.

Check the following:

1-During the "Cable repair" did your ISP start blocking port 25?

2-If your modem is also a router, did your ISP remotely re-set the modem/router and close port 25?

The MX records for matheson.dk point to

mail.matheson.dk (10)
backup-mx.post.tele.dk (20)

The A record for mail.matheson.dk points to IP address 87.57.208.74
which I suspect is your old ip address.

It looks like you updated the A record for www.matheson.dk with your new IP but you didn't update the A record for mail.matheson.dk.

Forget my last post. I really should wear my glasses more often It all looks correct however I cannot telnet into your mail server.

Do you have port 25 forwarded through your ADSL router to the server?

My ISP tells me that they have opened port 25 on their side of the connection and out on to the internet .

To me it looks as my SME is not opening port 25, even though it looks as is does at the "config show qsmtpd".

I have tried i server-manager to make a port forward, bort tcp and udp, on the sme, but it makes no difference.

Any other way I can make sure port 25 is open on my server ?

I would look more in to this:

Yes it's the MXbackup  that answers you, but it says DESTINATION server is too busy. That's your server.

Port 25 should be open from the MXbackup server to you. That is the reason they have it. But why not double check with them, since it worked before.

I used to have some problems with my SME 7, initially installed from 7 rc1, even though it was fully updated to final. That solved after a new install from the SME 7 Final CD. Maybe a bit drastic but an option to try. Especially if you have a spare machine to try it on.

Finally it seems to work. My ISP have opened port 25, and i am now recieving mails. Also my ip-adress need to be corrected on a router somewhere in theis system. Everything on the SME stood all-right.

Only dnsreport.com still says i can't accept post to postmaser@matheson.dk, but else it seems to work OK.

Thanks for the answers. I've been tearing my hair out in confussion, so it was great that somebody else gave my litlle problem their time and ideas. Than I felt i wasn't all alone in the world.
