Arb question...

I'm installing a new dual core server with 4gb's of RAM and way too much space within the next week...  Slight overkill as there are only 4 users at this moment but it needs to be done as the old server is clinging on for dear life... (Won't even mention the specs, might only get laughed at and not get any answers.)

My question is this...  Has anyone thought about or are currently running BOINC on their SME server?

Any tips/pointers would be appreciated.  Thank you in advance!

Well you don't need BOINC to run your sme server, so not installing BOINC won't delay you setting up the new server.
Perhaps you can be the first to try out BOINC & write a install Howto for sme, although I'm not so sure I'd want my server "power" being used by others.
It appears to support Linux.
You could test it out on the old server !

Hi Ray,

I hear you, but here's the specs...

AMD 6000 (3.0ghz) Dual Core , 4GB DDR2-667 , 2 x 320GB SATA II HDD ...

All of this, for a measly 5 users max (3 current) and only used as internet gateway and file server...

I really do believe in BOINC and what they are trying to achieve with some of the projects, so I might just do a How-to for SME, but am pretty sure not everyone will share my enthusiasm for gaining knowledge...

I think many here may agree with the philosophy of BOINC, and certainly the processor power is there in a box with that spec & so few users/potential load.
It was more the issue of security of servers and having the power available to do what the users wanted when they wanted it, and not to be impaired by external processing jobs.
It's a totally different matter with workstations though, which only affect one user and may be idle for long periods anyway.

Go for it if you want !
