setting up a mail server with SME7
« on: July 29, 2006, 07:13:36 PM »
Dear friends,

i'm trying to setup a mail server with SME.
i've installed SME7, created users and groups. ibays, hylafax, drupal.
everything working great.
its just breeze on SME7.

i'm sure setting up email is also ease.

but i'm stuck with email right now.

currently we are getting our mails from our company website using pop3. my company website is with a hosting company.

what i would like to have it.

i want to use pop3 to get mails from my website and distribute locally.
we have 4 users here.

i've even installed  fetchmail addon for SME 7.

i really don;t know how email technology works.

if someone please guide me to achive this.

i don't know what to fill in the email setting fields in SME  server manager page.

i have some questions as well.

say mycompany.com is hosted outside and getting mails.
if i create a virtual domain mycompany.com
on SME what will happen?

do i have to have the same domain name to get emails from my hosting company?

my SME users mail ID is different from my company mail ID.
when setting up SME server i entered homeoffice.com.
will it affect to get mails from my company website.

when my users reply to a mail, what is their reply email ID going to be?

am i asking too much?

i'll stop it here.

hope someone will light me.

Thank you in advance.

Rahulan.

P.S.  i don't want to change the DNS entries.
in short, use pop3 to collect mails and distribute locally.

on SME's email setting page what are the options do i have to click?

E-mail retrieval mode

SMTP authentication: ?

ETRN or multi-drop settings: ?

Secondary mail server: ?

Select sort method (for multi-drop)?

Select sort header (for multi-drop) ?

__________

what are the setting apply in the email delivery settings page

Forwarding address for administrative notices ?
E-mail to unknown users ?

Address of internal mail server ?
Address of Internet provider's mail server ?

The fetchmail option of the email configuration panel does that. You don't need any contrib.

Have you read the Users Guide?

Then allmost nothing should be happen. (This should be like setting up a physical postbox on a secret address that nobody now. There will then be no mail. The dns record is the "adressing mechanism".

I believe that the sme server contains all the ordinary mail server functions by default, but if this should be used for receiving mail there will need to be an dns record that is maintaining the mail adress to the right ip.

Personally I think that activating the web mail function of the sme server makes troubleshooting more easy. (The first thing I use to do for checking the mail server is to send a mail to my hotmail acount, and one in return. If this does not work, the error will normally be related to a firewall or a routing problem. Of cource the dns record has to be "right" to be able to receive mail.

How do you setup E-mail retrieval mode to get email from a sme7 server that will only allow secure POP3 connection? I can't use ETRN for the server due to being behind firewall that will not open port for that.

Thanks
Doyle

Not so. From a root command line, do:

config setprop fetchmail Protocol pop3s
signal-event email-update
