About SME Server

SME Server is the leading Linux distribution for small and medium
enterprises. SME Server is brought to you by SME Server, Inc.
( http://www.smeserver.org/ ), a non-profit corporation that exists to
provide marketing and legal support for SME Server.

SME Server is freely available under the GNU General Public License
and is only possible through the efforts of the SME Server community.
However, the availability and quality of SME Server is dependent on
meeting our expenses, such as hosting costs, server hardware, etc.

As such, we ask for a small donation to offset costs and fund further
development.

Please visit http://www.smeserver.org/donate/ to donate.

Installation

- Simple single CD install
- The default installation procedure will rewrite all disks in the system
- Automatic detection of multi-CPU and HyperThreading CPUs
- In order to install on i586 machines you will need to do the following:
 - Type "smei586" at the boot prompt

- Many installation problems are caused by the following issues:
* Incorrectly burnt CD:
Please use the "Media Check" to test your media. This screen is
presented at the start of the installation
* Faulty memory
   - Type "memtest86" at the boot prompt
* Unsupported or faulty hardware
 - Check the memory and CD media
 - Use good quality cables and an error-free CDROM drive
 - Ensure master/slave configuration is correct, if appropriate
 - Disable onboard RAID controllers
 - Disable power saving and ACPI features in the BIOS

Automated RAID installation

NOTE: All disks must be the same size for SME Server 7

- The default installation provides the following setup:
 - Single disk provides one-way RAID1
   - Console screen allows simple addition of second disk to provide mirroring
 - Two disks are configured as a RAID1 mirror
 - Three to five disks are configured as RAID5 (/boot partition is RAID1)
 - Six or more disks are configured as RAID6 (/boot partition is RAID1)
- (bug 2015, 2066) The installer provides options to:
 - skip software raid
 - skip logical volume manager
 - force a raid 1 install on the first two disks detected
 - attempt to reserve one disk as a spare
- (bug 130) A script has been provided for conversion from non-RAID to RAID

Upgrades

- Always perform a backup prior to major system upgrades
- An upgrade will preserve the existing data
- Seamless upgrades from unmodified SME Server 7.0, 6.5 6.0.1 and 6.0 servers
- Many common contributed add-ons have been included in the standard
 distribution

Email

- Virus scanning
- Executable attachment blocking
- Spam filtering
 - Automatic tagging with X-Spam-Status header
 - Optional sorting to 'junkmail' mailbox
 - Selectable tagging levels

   places
 - Can enter pseudonyms of pseudonyms
- Secure POP, IMAP and SMTP
- SMTP authentication for users and for ISP connection
- Horde/IMP3 based webmail
- (bug 1893) Local mail delivery is noticeably faster

 - Local connections are not subject to spam scanning, and DNS tests

Software installer

- Yum based software installation with server-manager panel
- (bug 59, 1163) Software installer panel has been enhanced to:
 - provide better feedback during installs
 - use multiple mirror sites
 - automatically choose the closest working mirror
 - deal with large updates
Note: The 'prereposetup' stage may take 5-10 minutes for a large update set

Software Installer/yum upgrades from 7.0 to 7.1
« Reply #1 on: December 28, 2006, 11:30:40 PM »
We have done quite a bit of work to improve the Software Installer and yum based upgrades. We now consult a list of mirror sites, automatically choose the fastest mirror for your server, and failover between mirrors if one of the mirrors is down or has inconsistent data.

You can do a complete upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1 from the server-manager, if you follow this procedure:

- Update only the following packages:

   smeserver-yum
   yum
   yum-plugin-fastest-mirror
   python-sqlite

- Then select the rest of the updates (or run "yum update")

- The total updates are over 200Megabytes - an update takes a long time

- The "prereposetup" stage can take 5-10 minutes - this is normal

- See also:

  http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2144
  http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1956

The 7.1 package set should now be visible to all 7.0 servers as updates.

N.B. It is good idea to enable the CentOS base and updates repositories. They are enabled by default in 7.1 and should normally be enabled on all servers, but we didn't want to force them to enabled on existing servers.

Please report bugs and potential bugs to the bug tracker, and only there.

Please don't report them in this forum, report them in the bug tracker.

SME Server 7.1 Release Status (released)

Hi,

As tiny question : is this version a definitive version 7.1 ?
As i don't know very well state of developpement of a version, this one is released candidate, and presented like a final product.

Version 7.0 was RC3 before final 7.0 .

As i just installed a fresh 7.0, and am still importing a version 6.5 production on, i m thinking to restart from a new fresh 7.1.
If it is a almost final, may be should i wait some weeks until final.

Thx for explainations,

Sebb.

Does this answer your question?

Note the SME Server 7.1 not SME Server 7.1rc (release candidate).
This is the final product.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

Hi sebb

Yes, this is the the real 7.1, being installed on my boxes as we speak.

There was only one release candidate, which turned into the actual release very quickly.

You should definately use it to upgrade from 6.5.

Many thanks and congratulations are due to the devs.

Cheers

General features

Please forgive me if my question is a silly one: what Gordon wrote means that the yum "[base] (Centos - os)" and "[updates] (Centos - updates)" MUST be enabled in the yum_repositories ConfigDB, to have the base CentOS system up-to-date, am I right?

If yes, maybe I have discovered a bug of the 6.x -> 7.x upgrade...
