Can SME server support 1000 user accounts? My friend wants to migrate from MS Exchange to a linux based mail server.

Most certainly...  If you have a look around, somewhere on contribs.org there is a guy asking for a way to speed up his php because his SME box was running 7700 users/mailboxes....

So yeah, it can be done, just depends on what machine you run it on...
