can't join the domain
« on: January 17, 2007, 08:49:35 PM »
Hey,

Im sorry I have to ask this question AGAIN along with all the posts but I have look and tried all the options but unfortunatly they have not worked.

I have a freshly installed sme server.

I have set my domain as domainname.local and have set workgroup and domain to yes and roaming profiles to yes.

On my xp machine i have applied the reg patch (although i never used to have to) and checked that its worked.

i try setting the domain to domainname or domainname.local but neither of them work.

It says the domain controller could not be contact.

Is there anything I have missed? I havn't install anything in addition to it and all firewalls and anti virus are disabled on the workstation.

I can contact the server fine through name and ip and can access shares.

Any ideas?

Edited: - Sorry i have install CUPS for printing but that is it

Thanks

Be sure to enter the Windows Workgroup value you entered in the server-manager in the Workgroup section (where you also enabled roaming profiles) as domain when trying to join Windows based PC's to SME Server, the domain entered during configuration has nothing to do with your internal domain in this case.

It is a bit confusing to users but the value specified in the server-manager is also the internal domain which can be totally different from the outside domain name.

Sorry,

I am a little lost? Please can you explain a little more. I need to have the server and windows on the same workgroup and then I can join the domain.

If this is the case I have done this.

I have also done another fresh install of this so CUPS is not install now. I have done a yum update so everything is up to date as well.

Thanks

Ar you able to ping the server at it's IP number from the system you want to join?

The above is NOT the domain name you give a windows client to join it to the domain.

The domain name is the WORKGROUP name.

For example, if you gave the Windows Workgroup name on the server manager page as MYWORKGROUP.  The domain name  you give the windows client to join the domain is MYWORKGROUP

Sounds like the problem I had.

Yes I had a workgroup and a different domain name.

I changed the workgroup to match the domain name, then joined new domain, used my admin user for login for the first time. I then just reboot and it worked.
