Topic: FTP performance through SME Server and Ip Forwarding

Hi,

I've successfully configured ipfporwarding on my SME Server in order to host my FTP directory on a computer inside the LAN.
(Thnks again M. Brummel )

But, I've noticed a very bad performance of this solution !!!

Before i set up my SME Server, users accessed the FTP very quickly.....now the should wait 3mn before receiving file list !!!!

Is me server too slow ?
Do i need a faster CPU ? More memory ?

Is the configuration uncorrect ?

My Server:
P133 / 128Mb / 2Gb HD
SME Server v 5.1.2
ADSL line

My FTP host
AMD Tbird 1Ghz / 384Mo SDRam / 154Gb HD
LAN

David, mine does the exact same thing.  Everything works fine, just authentication (on the 2K machine where the FTP is) takes a minute or two.  I don't worry about it myself but will watch the thread to see if anyone has a solution.

Ok, perhaps it is due to the fact SME Server V5 does not support PDC for Win2k/WinXP station ???

I've seen a lot of complaints like this relating to those $100 LinkSys/Netgear/etc. broadband routers. A lot of those people had better results if they forced their NIC to go 100Mb Full-Duplex to the router's built-in switch instead of auto-sensing it. Maybe it's something like that, where one or more of the NICs in the chain aren't operating at full speed? Just something else to consider...

Hi guys

I have had an ftp server running through e-smith 4.0 before without any problems!? I use G6 ftp server and set it to passive ip mode. I did have to make sure that the ftp server software was aware of my external ip (i.e the one given by my isp).

As I havent had this problem myself, i can t help anymore than that. G6 is available from www.downloads.com.

How have you setup your ip port forwarding? Have you told E-smith that the ftp server is now hosted from an internal IP, rather than the E-smith server itself. I know its a obvious question, but ive done that myself before now....

I'm not doing any IP forwarding and just re-installed my server onto a Celeron 300 with 64megs RAM and I'm getting timeouts on my FTP connections.  I use Cute FTP in WinXP to connect to my E-Smith box which is connected through a linksys hub to my 3Com DLS modem to the internet.  Before going to 5.1.2 I was connecting no problem at light speed.  Now all I get is "Socket connected; waiting for welcome message" and then it times out.  Nothing on my network has changed excpet the server hardware which is still using the same nics as before.  Even if the network was only working at 10MB it should still connect really fast.

Hi,
i also use G6 FTP server...but didn't find the "passive mode" menu or check box ... can you help me to find it ? I was looking for because I knew it was improving performances...

yes, i set up Ipforwarding, and it works fine....but I have this timeout problem to solve...

Hi,
I don't use any router.
My server is connected directly to my ECI Ethernet modem.
And my LAN is connected by a 100Mb Hub (not 10/100 autosense only 100Mb)

yeh, i don't know if this may have any relevance to this...

but when i was running debian and an ftp server i had to put the host/ip in '/etc/hosts' otherwise the connection would be really slow to authenticate and list

just follow the pattern in '/etc/hosts' and you'll find that it will probably run faster...

i just followed the structure that was already there...
the file is '/etc/hosts' (without the quotes)
if i remember right it was something like this:

192.168.0.1 user1.domain.com user1
192.168.0.1 user2.domain.com user2


obviously replace appropriately

it´s in the setup/main/multi ip setting (ctrl + i)

there you can enter you actual external ip, which you easyl get here:
http://www.dyndns.org/cgi-bin/check_ip.cgi

but that´s not the problem of this task i think

the problem is: you´re not able to connect your sme-ftp server from a
client on a XP machine. Mine works fine between 2-5MB throughput.

don't change anything !!!!

people are stopped at my SME Server .... and they don't have access to my ftp !!!

Before they had access but it was extremely long ... any idea ?

I really need this function now that my servers HD are unsufficiant for storing my files
i don't wan't to change to a more standard version where I would be forced to configure myself everything (account, mail, ftp,...)
