Asus A8V-VM install issue
« on: February 22, 2007, 08:32:08 PM »
Hi again all, no questions ofr ages then 2 lol
Im trying to install a new sme 7.1 and have both an old 7.0 iso and the new one

Both boot and test fine but
it comes up with 'no hard drives found', fine i think i need a driver

but if i continue it then says
traceback...
NameError: glabal name 'dispatch' is not defined.

Is this cos it cant find the 3 x 320 gig sata drives that are on it or some other error.
Also how do i get the drivers i need for this chipset K8M890 onto the cd. I dont have any floppies lying around, but cd's to spare

Thanks for any advice

James

In general, it's just easiest to avoid unsupported hardware...

With SATA (I assume) on the mainboard, there are often BIOS compatibility settings that may help you.

Just look in the BIOS settings under SATA and experiment a bit.  No guarantees, but I've had some success in the past...

I not recommend any new ASUS MB. Instead, use INTEL 945GNT.
With ASUS you loose your time, because not has SATA compatible setting in bios, and is much dificult to make a driver.

Suggest: Change the MB

See this Centos thread:
http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2007-January/074209.html
Try jumper the drives to SATA-1 (1.5Gb/s) mode
Make sure you have latest BIOS from Asus
If still no go change mobo

I have been building PCs for quite a few years for a living (remember CP/M?).  But this is only my opinion...

ASUS is one of the largest and most respected of mainboard manufacturers.  Their products are almost always of superior quality to almost any other brand you can buy...and you will pay just a little bit more for the name ASUS as well.

That being said, like most manufacturers, ASUS makes mainboards at varying price points and with various chipsets.  For stability and compatibility, I recommend mainboards with nVidia chipsets for AMD processors and I recommend Intel chipset mainboards for use with Intel processors.

I also note that memory is by far the most sensitive choice you can make when building a computer.  For this reason alone, I recommend you buy your PCs already assembled in a well tested configuration.  My shop is littered with incompatible memory modules...  You can't even order the same memory parts and expect to get the same memory modules regardles of brand!  Furthermore, it is almost never safe to mix dissimilar memory parts in a PC.  Don't do it!  If you have to, replace all the memory when upgrading.

I repeat: memory compatibility is THE key issue in stability of a computer.  And frankly, I don't trust a new hardware configuration until a) after I've done a careful OS installation with the new configuration and b) it has run without problems in the field for some weeks.  Be VERY observant of ANY glitches during OS installations when working with a new hardware configuration...they more often than not indicate memory compatibility issues.

hi all, i have tried the cent os advice ie limiting the speed, all the different sata modes, raid ahci ide etc none work. I also used the PATA interface but this was so slow (1200k rebuild speed) that i have abondoned the board until centos 5 is stable.  Thanks anyway lads/lasses
