« on: February 19, 2007, 10:03:36 AM »
I did a install using software raid
first      disk hda
second  disk hdc
cdrom          hdd

Now i did somthing wrong, yeah did :-( need to reinstall
But i dont want to loos al my data about 100GB, i dont have disk space left for a back up, so....

re-install whit hdc unpluged, turn off system, plug in hdc

big question will SME auto sync hdc and destroy all my data?

It should work automagically as long as you didn't originally install with the "noraid" option.

-Shut down the machine
-Install drive as master on the second IDE channel (hdc)
-Boot up
-Log on as admin to get to the admin console
-Go to #5 Manage disk redundency

It should tell you there if the drives are syncing up.  Don't turn off the server until the sync is complete or it will start from the beginning again.  When it is done syncing it will show a good working raid1.

If it doesn't work then file a bug report but I think all the raid issues have been fixed.

Software Mirroring

The SME Server comes by default with RAID1 disk mirroring if you install one or two drives. The server is configured to accept one drive and will function properly. You can verify the RAID1 status from the console. --server manager.-- If you later wish to add a second drive, just add it and instruct the server via the console. --server manager.-- to create the mirror. It will take some time to build so do it during scheduled maintenance. They can be either SCSI or IDE drives.

here it says instruct the server via the console.

so how does it work, can i copy my data or not,?

k, i have a work around,
install single hd,
take the hhc out of the system, build it into a external case,
copy your data, en them build it back into the server.

It's already been asked and answered but...
Once you plug in the second drive, you would need to login to the console as admin and select one of the menu choices to "automgically" start the syncing to the second drive.  It will overwrite everyting in the second drive.

If you want to copy the data over, you would need to mount it as another drive in a temporary place and copy the data over to the first drive.  Once the data has been copied to the first drive, you can do the "automagic" sync to make a mirrored set.

But there may be a problem with just plugging in a "previously raid" hd in the system.  For some reason, it wanted to use the second drive as the primary.  I needed to use the fdisk to mark it as "non auto raid" for the system to start up properly.  In other words, be careful....
