Noob Having Trouble with Email
« on: February 19, 2007, 08:10:11 PM »
I am finally getting around to getting email off the ground and I have a problem that is probably simple but I can't seem to get it. I have read thru the manual and searched here but can't find an answer.

I can send email from one pc to another that are both on the internal network referring to me@mydomain.xxx. Using outlook or t'bird I can send email over the internet using my ISP's address e.g. me@sympatico.ca

I can send an email to the outside world but it does not get there. I can send one from the outside world but I do not receive it. I do not get any error messages. I have sent things to me@mydomain.ca and then webmailed in but they are not there. I do however see the emails I previously sent while on the internal network and I see some emails from cron to me@mydomain.ca

So there seems to be a disconnect between internal and external. I seem to have connectivity to my server from the outside as I can webmail in and VPN in to it.

Thx in advance for your help.

Check your ports (25). If your server doesn't send mail.
And can you please post your /var/log/qpsmtpd/current logs and qmail logs
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

Thx for quick reply

When you say "check port 25", I'm not sure what I should do. On my server manager I have no port forwarding rules, but again I'm not sure what you are after. Please specify.

I could not find

When you say "check port 25", I'm not sure what I should do.

Google for shields up or go to grc.com and find it. Then use the portscan function and see if your port is open.
"It should just work" if it doesn't report it. Thanks!

Done a little looking around and found that "Sympatico" my isp blocks port 25 as per attached.

One of the disadvantages of this arrangement is that it also prevents the use of any port 25 SMTP server other than the ones that Sympatico provides. (SMTP servers that use a port other than 25, like GMail which uses 465 for example, are not affected by this block.) So if you have a third-party e-mail provider, you will not be able to send outgoing mail through their SMTP server. You must use a Sympatico SMTP server. Your outgoing mail will still appear with whatever e-mail address you wish, even if it is not a Sympatico e-mail address.

Another disadvantage is that it prevents a Sympatico customer from running their own incoming SMTP e-mail server.

Please note that port 25 blocking does not affect incoming email through POP3 servers, which do not use port 25. You are free to use whatever POP3 provider you wish.

Then enter simpatico's accout under settings for outgoing mail.

Thx, I have done this and sent emails to work and we will see what happens.

Ok, that seemed to have worked as I checked on my webmail for work account and the email showed up. I responded and it  has not shown at home yet.

I changed my email reception settings to multi drop and everything showed up at home, so far so good.

What is the practical difference between ETRN and multidrop?

Bpvik and Ray Mitchell;

Thanks for the answers. I am at work now and it appears as though I can send and receive ok. I will try for other members of my family and see if the emails get resolved properly and then publish here what I did. It might not be rocket science but I haven't found anything clear (for a tard like me).

Ray, I read thru the link you sent and I did not (so far) need anything as complicated. I have a dynamic dns service and I apparently can send and receive emails and myname@myserver.ca instead of myname@sympatico.ca (where sympatico is my ISP).

Thx again.
