No LAN, No Internet, No Ping.

I've installed SME 7.1 in an already existing network as a Server only. I use a separate Router/Firewal. Also I only allow DNS in our LAN none of the clients are configured for DHCP so in the SME 7.1 setup I turn DHCP off.
I also included the ip of one of my DNS Servers.
Problem is that although "ipconfig" says the the network card is running and the ip is okay I can't ping anything in the LAN and nothing in the LAN can ping the server. For now we can forget about the Internet or configuring the server from a web browser.
It might be a Firewall problem but I'm not sure so how do I turn off the firewall and does any body have any ider why this server does nothing at all.

What ip number did you enter for it's own IP number? Is this ipnumber also reported by your ifconfig command? Is this in the same range as the range of other computers in your network? You only seldom need to set your DNS server as the SME Server should be capable of resolving DNS itself.

The IP is within the correct range for my LAN, and yes, it is displayed by "ipconfig" and it is also in the "/home/e-smith/db/confiuration" file along with other information which indecates that the driver for the network card is also installed. No it's not a cable problem or a connection problem. I can run other computers using the same cable and the same socket and thanks.

Got the exact same problem here. Have tried different NIC and also took the server to a friend of mine but got the same problem there. Don't know what to do next...

Checked DNS (tried without, tried setting the other SME as DNS and also tried setting ISP DNS), can't even ping the gateway (the other SME server).

The hardware have earlier been running ok as a win server.

I have two servers with 3com network cards that do not work properly unless the network card has a link light when I boot the SME.  ifconfig shows a valid configuration but I can't get in or out. Re-booting with the network cable connected makes it work again.

It is also possible that I had to physically power off the system, connect the cable, and power back on before it would work; I don't remember for sure.
