Slow domain logon
« on: March 01, 2002, 11:16:22 AM »
Hello

I having trouble with long domain logon times on a SME 5.1. I use a Win98 client. It can take up to 3 minutes before the logonscript shows. There is only four PC:s on the net. Three XP Home Edititon (no domain logon) and one Win 98. The server is a Compaq Deskpro 4000 133Mhz with 64 mb ram. The server uses ADSL to connect to the Internet.

When use telnet the logon take ages but only from the inside. If I use SSH from Internet i is pretty fast.

There is no problem to surf the internet.

Have anyone seen this before?

Michael

Are you using DHCP? And what's the DNS or WINS settings on the workstations? The troubles might be due to some name resolution problems.

Yes, I'm using DHCP.

The client has no Dns och Wins setting (DHCP). The problem occured when I switched to a "new" server with SME5.1.

I beginning suspect that it is an hw problem.

What's your DHCP setup? Is e-smith correctly set up as DHCP server and the workstations as clients?

Concerning hardware: sometimes 10/10mbit network cards need to be manually configured to one of these speeds (also duplex mode). Don't ask me how to do this on your e-smith box... Do you use a nic for the external connection? May be you could try another nic for the internal network.

Just a thought...

Yepp, The workstations are DHCP-clients. The server provides the IP-addresses.

I have the same thought. I plan to raplace the internal Nic (3Com) to a Netgear FA 310 tx.
