Topic: The dreaded VT8251 saga continues

I have bought a system for a client, it uses VT8251 Chipset. Would not install with SATA drives, but wiull install once changed to IDE drives.

Now when system is bootinbg it appeares to hang at the "Creating quota files" stage.

The drives are Seaget 320Gb 16Mb units, P4 @ 3.0MHz, 512Mb Ram - i'd have thought this hould be more than enough to do what is required!

Anyone have any thoughts?

I'd rather not have to change the motherboard if possible! My supplier has been veyr good so far, I don't want to jeopardise that relationship!!

Have you tried installing CentOS 4.4 on it ?

However, it does appear to be a troublesome chipset.

Ended up with new motherboard! Much better now!!

Can you list the make and model of the old and new mainboards ?

Old mobo was Asus P5VDC-MX/C - had immense problems duew to the VIA 8251 Chipset.

New mobo is Asus P5PE-VM - uses Intel 865 Chipset  -much smoother operation!!

Take heed!!! AVOID VIA CHIPSETS!!

VIA and SiS are low performance chipsets, in any case. Always go nVidia or Intel.

And with Intel, the P965 seems to be the most highly rated at the moment, as it uses an improved Southbridge chip.
