Backup and restore using "third-party" products
« on: March 26, 2007, 08:55:03 AM »
We are using HP Data Protector as a (remote) backup system, and we want to include our SME server in that system. The system consists of a backup agent installed on the SME and a central server. Basically a remote file backup.

Installation of backup agents is not a problem, and taking backups works fine. Restoring individual "data files" in user folders and ibays works too. But restoring a complete system does not work at all.

I suspect that a few signal-events are required, but I need to know which.

What is required before and after a backup?

What is required before and after a restore?

Thanks!

It is standard stuff and has been answered MANY times. A search would have netted you many topics and this being the most recent:

This thread outlines what happens during a system backup, what directories are backed up and what happens during a restore.

Thanks! I have searched, but most hits covered the "native" backup solutions.

A few related questions:

I have moved parts of the pre- and post-backup events, to prevent tape-related commands to be run, as we do not have a tape unit connected to the server. Are there any downsides to that?

When the pre-backup event runs, I get this in the eventlog. I do not see that on another server with the same SME version. Is that normal?

There is no need to do that.  The scripts will only attempt to rewind/eject a tape if there is one present.

/etc/e-smith/events/pre-backup/S25gentle-ldap-dump is not part of a stock SME7. Where did it come from?

My bad. That server is an SME 6. Still, are those messages "normal"?

Yes, that would definitely be "your bad" (in more ways than one).  SME6 is depreciated and no longer being maintained/supported.  You "Need" to upgrade ASAP.

I don't know.  The backup/restore routine has changed and I don't have a running SME6 server anymore and don't remember how it worked.

You posted in the SME7 forums and is assumed that if you post in the version 7 forum that you have version 7.  All the information I gave you relates to SME7 and may or may not be valid for SME6.

In any case, you are posting in the wrong forum.  I am moving this topic to the SME6 section.  Maybe you can get some help there.
