Mvix and sme
« on: August 11, 2007, 01:19:35 PM »
Anyone here that has used a Mvix through sme?  What I am after iss a  way of allowing the Mvix have open conection with all machines on the network as to be able to watch my movies. So fare it seems as the server has given the Mvix the ip 192.168.1.13 but I am unable to see the Mvix in the network or able to get a find in a search.  I not no what the port it is running on only ip so if anyone can help it would be great.

More info in Mvix is at http://www.mvixusa.com

And when you go there read the manual, especially the cahpter showing how to configure your windows boxes to use the new system. Since it has got an IP number it seems SME Server recognizes it, perhaps the problem might be in the necessary IPX/SPX/NetBIOS driver, there probably is no Linux driver for the systen and I don't know if it is possible to transfer data from/through SME Server to the system. Like said first thing is to try and configure a windows box now.

I think you need to re-read your mvix manual. The mvix is NOT writeable or viewable from the network. It can read from any workstations on the network (but not from the smeserver without some changes). It is NOT a file/media server, it is a media player.

The smeserver has supplied it with an IP on your network, so you should be able to scan the network from the mvix and see any windows shares that are available

It is using smb to look for windows shares. You will only be able to access those that do not have any security.

All good and well saying that there are changes needed to be made with sme but what?  Since there is no user account how do you give permissions to an ip? lmhosts? sme samba.conf?  As we are both aware that the machine is found because it has been allocated a ip and subnet correct but it is unable to search for files on other machines.  How do I give it permissions to access other machines?

It doesn't need special permission on the smeserver to search other machines (this is covered on the mvix site - but basically means allow anyone to access as guest). The smeserver does NOT restrict this.

If you mean allow the mvix to look for files on the smeserver, which is different from

Then you have to open up the security on ibays with a few hacks in the background. These I do NOT suggest as they will break all other security and remove the requirement/capability for user authentication and control.

I must be very stupid but have granted guest permissions on local and on sme still nothing

Installed protocols mentioned so damned if I know what the problem is

It's not an smeserver problem (or at least I haven't found that....). As the smeserver has given it an IP (I assume that you used dhcp), it should just be able to search (so long as the workstations are on the same subnet - not sure if it will look outside of it's own subnet).

Which model? I have the 760HD. It took a little while first time, but saw the shares from the kids XP boxes fine without playing with IPX etc. (could see the smeserver shares, but would not let you look in them).

I did NOT try to use the NDAS stuff (as the forums were less than complimentary re: it).

I may have been lucky, but I went with very basic networking (standard XP setup) first and it all worked.

PS. Am now quite happy with it
