File copy issue on clients
« on: September 30, 2008, 08:32:44 AM »
This problem is causing me serious stress and I'd appreciate any feedback that might point me in the right direction.

I recently upgraded a new client's environment - new server, replacing an ancient Windows box, and 4 new PCs running XP Pro. The server is in full server/gateway mode, with, originally, one on-board Gig NIC and one 100 Mbps NIC in a PCI slot. All pretty standard stuff - and I set up two other servers for other clients at the same time, neither of whom are hitting this issue.

The problem is that when large-ish files (500 Kb and up, generally) are accessed (for example, copied from the only share on the server, where all the client files are located, to the local PCs) I'm seeing file copy errors. When copying, the message on the Windows box is:

Error Copying File or Folder

Cannot copy <filename>. The specified network name is no longer available.

And of course, it is available - I can see it fine via Windows Explorer.

The error is pretty consistent, although on occasion is will actually copy the file. A similar error shows itself when sending attachments in Outlook.

In working to resolve this, I have had the cabling checked (where there was a lot of crosstalk) and re-terminated. There are new patch cables between PCs and wall and patch panel and switch. The switch is a new 100 Mbps, 16 port unit. I have also swapped out both server NICs, and yet I still get the problem. Quite often, the error pops up as soon as Paste is clicked, as if it hasn't actually talked to the server. I also saw the same result today on one of the office Macs (there are 2 and 5 PCs); this ruled out a problem with the PC driver.

So, basically, everything between the PCs and the server has been replaced except the switch, which was newly installed after the first time I saw the problem. I'm planning to try a different switch next, although I'm fairly sure it isn't a factor.

I'd appreciate any thoughts as to where this is coming from.

Thanks,

I assume you have applied all SME 7.3 updates? Did you also update Samba to version 3.0.28?

There is a bug report which I cannot find at the moment but that Samba version seems to fix many (similar) bug reports.
Not sure where the Macs fit in that picture but would definitely try the Samba upgrade (that version we are running fine on all servers).

What error messages are you seeing in your log files (particularly the samba log file)? To me it looks like you server might be affected by this bug: http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3762

Michael and Frank,

Many thanks for your responses. I am on 7.3 with all updates - I applied the latest set yesterday, including the Samba fix in the bug report, and am still having issues (I've updated the bug).

What is odd is that I am seeing this only at one client's - perhaps because they tend to have larger files and do a lot of emailing of them...
