win98 cant access the ibays
« on: March 11, 2002, 02:05:02 PM »
gday
for some reason i have no trouble connecting to the ibays on my comp with win2000 however the rest of the computers in the house are all win 98, when i try to open the server computer in net neighbourhood it asks for a password to IPC$ or it says no permission to access resources.
any ideas?

do i need to tell them to log onto NT domain???

Hi

You must be using 5.1.2. Your users must logon to microsoft networking with the same username and password as they have on the sme server. from memory version 5.0 allows general browsing even with no users set up - so it may be a change in the defaults for the latest version of samba. Make sure that any ibay you want to be browsed is set up with read and write everyone.

I'm interested to know what others have found.

Just a guess but maybe on the win98 box's you could turn plain txt on.. i believe  the is two files in the utils foulder on a win98 CD. one is for turning plain txt and and the other off. Sometimes helps with the login . apart form that you could check you have the correct tcp/ip settings on the win98 boxes

This might help but like i said its only a guess.

i havnt found the answer thanx to those that replied,
but i think that the easiest thing to do is to map a network drivve to an ibay with the ibay password
this is a pain but is there a better way????????????

Dear Jonathon
You need to either make your Win98 PC's members of the domain, and that will force you to log on to them with correct user name and password combination, (assuming your sme is set up as domain/workgroup controller)
OR
you can log on to each Win98 PC with a user name and password combination that is valid and set up on the sme server (under Users in server manager). You will need to delete the username.pwl files in C:\windows if you already have used an incorrect or different password for a particular user.

Then when you try to connect to ibays via Network Neighbourhood you will be granted immediate access without being asked for a password

I'm guessing that your Win2000 PC is part of the domain or you have logged on to it using the admin password that is (also) applicable to the sme server or you have already set up your user name and password on the Win 2000 PC (which is the same combination as for the sme server).

Your ibays should be owned by a Group, and your Users are then made members of the Group(s) for which they need ibay access. This is good management practice and allows you to control who has access rights to which ibays.
