is it my network or is it my raid5 ?
« on: May 27, 2007, 04:42:13 PM »
When I copy a large file from my SME to my windows xp client, I get a stable 20% network utilization according to windows task manager.

On the other hand, when I copy from my xp to sme, that is in the opposite direction, the network utilization goes in a distinct sawtooth pattern swingning between 25 and 5 % with a frequency of about 10 seconds.

Since the problem only occurs in one direction I assume that it is not a network issue.

On the other hand I have a hard time believing that it is my sw raid5 on my sme that can't keep up writing. During the copy TO sme the cpu utilization was around 15-20%.

What does your experience tells you is the most likely culprit ?

My setup is as follows:

smeserver: dual celeron 500mhz, 256mb ram on a abit bp6 motherboard with 4 ata ports.  Only 1 hd per port.  1 hd for OS, 3 in a RAID5 for data.

On it sits a linksys wrt54g wireless router.

I find it very unlikely that a 54mbit network, utilized 20% in any way could  keep my sme busy writing to disk.

But it IS consistent with at sw raid being slower writing than reading.

Any help is appreciated

It seems to me that you are asking questions about SME server when you should be questioning XP. It's XP which needs to put the data onto the network when you are copying from XP to SME.

it's not win xp

Because when I copy between my two xp clients I get a network utilization of 75% flat.

So the switch part of my router and my xp clients is ok.

it is definitely the raid

When I unmounts my raid5 from /home/e-smith/files/ibays/Primary/
so my ibays now is on my single disk OS hd, I then have a consistent high network utilization of 27%.

Something must be wrong with my software raid, I simple can not believe that my hardware can't keep up.
