third hard drive - where is it?
« on: June 21, 2007, 10:18:58 AM »
Hi all,

sorry for a very newbie question, but...

I just installed a SME server. My PC has 3 hard drives:

 - 2 GB as master on IDE1
 - 3 GB as slave on IDE1
 - 40GB as master on IDE2

I chose to install this way because I thought the system could be in the smaller disks, and the data (I plan to use this server to exchange family photos with relatives using Gallery2) in the big drive.

However, I type 'df', and it looks like only the first drive is listed.

If I try yo mount hdc1 it tells me it's already mounted or the mount point is busy.

How can I find where a drive is mounted?

Hope I explained myself...

thanks!

SME server software is designed to use one or more identical hard drives. If you use anything else, you will get undefined and perhaps unexpected results.

Hi,

all three HDs were installed when I set up the server. I'll post the output of the command you suggest later (I'm away from home now), but from the other post

it looks like I need to change my setup, right?

Hi,

Are they listed in the bios?  If so you could maybe add them with Michael's how-to.

Edited 'cos I missed the point I think.

Hi again,

here's the results of cat /proc/mdstat...

Quote
Personalities : [raid1]
md1 : active raid1 hda1[0] hdd1[2] hdb1[1]
      100672 blocks [3/3] [UUU]

md2 : active raid1 hda2[0] hdd2[2] hdb2[1]
      3048128 blocks [3/3] [UUU]

unused devices: <none>

... which makes me see the 40 GB hd is the slave on IDE2 (hdd1), not the master. Any hints on what the above means?

Thanks,

Sorry to be so abrupt, but RTFM.

Don't just launch yourself into a new distro and expect it to do what you think...

SME is a tightly controlled, idiot-proof (nearly) system. It expects you to have  2 identical size drives and it automatically makes them RAID1.

If you only have 1 drive, it considers it a "degraded" RAID1 array.

If you have 3 (identical drives) it still makes it RAID1, but one is a hot-swap spare.

You have 3 different drives....expect the unexpected; cross your fingers and reach for the OFF button.

My guess is that it tried to make a RAID1 array based on your 2Gb disk.

If you want the 40Gb disk as a data drive, search the forums on how to add another HDD. It's not difficult, really.

BUT --- the best thing to do would be to get another 40Gb drive and just use the two of them as a RAID1 system  - SME +DATA on the same disk - after all, SME does not take up that much room. This would give you better redundancy in case of HDD failure.

And get rid of the 2Gb and 3Gb disk - they are almost door-stop material these days.

Cheers
 - and good luck.
Ian

Personally... if I had 2 40GB drives I'd rather have 80GB of working space rather than waste a drive on RAID... Why no option to do this when setting up SME?

sound like you use your server for testing..

from sme's point of view data security & integrity and services uptime (raidX, x>0) are the most important things.

and, last but not least, nowadays  hds are big and really not expensive.

The option "NORAID" didn't work for you when you installed SME ?

No - its a fully fledged household file/web/ftp server with a single 250Gb drive at mo...and I back up to tape every now and then.... and thats all I need really....
