Remote Email Collection and Sending

Hi all,
I'm a relative newb to SME issues, but I've used it for a long time ( the sign of great software ! )

We've set up a new install with SME and it's working great as a mail server to the local network. We also have people out in remote areas that we would like to have access to their email and be able to send email, ideally without using open VPN.

I've got the email working locally, and I can recieve email remotely using just email client settings and port 959, the problem I'm having is sending email remotely. Email just sits there in the outbox and isn't sent, and the windows 'test account settings' fails with :

Send test e-mail message: Outlook could not connect to the outgoing mail
server (SMTP). The problem could be your SSL or port settings for the outgoing server. Verify your port And SSL settings under More Settings on the Advanced tab.

I'm sure this is do-able, but I just can't pick where I'm going wrong with it.

Any hints, tips or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi again .. found http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=37211.0 which looks like it may be a solution for me.
