Openvpn really slow
« on: June 18, 2007, 06:47:36 PM »
Hi everyone,

I've been running sme 7.1 for awhile with OpenVPN.  In the recent months, it has been running slow.  It takes 45 seconds to download a 4 meg file.  Is that acceptable or expected?  The server is on an ADSL connection.  The ISP says they don't shape traffic and does not block ports.  The server is a 1.7GHz Duron with 512 megs of RAM with 2 80Gig IDE drives mirrored.  I only have about 7 gigs of data in 5 separate directions.  Should I be upgrading to a more recent CPU?

Please help.

thanks.

4 MBytes in 45, that means about 90KBytes/s,  728Kbits/s. I think it's quite good for an adsl connexion (the max in theory is 900Kbits/s). If you find it too slow, well, you'll need a sdsl, or something faster, but changing your server won't change anything.
C'est la fin du monde !!!

I also add that the most important parameter is upload speed of adsl connection.. so, the faster is your upload, the better is your vpn :-)

Thanks for your responses.

My windows explorer refresh has a delay of 1 or 2 seconds.  It's not consistent.  If I step down a tree, it could be quite swift.  When click back up the tree, it can halt for 2 - 3 seconds before I get a refresh.  Is this normal or expected?
