i have my sme server with address say" xyz.info" when i configure outlook to access the pop3s service or smtps service i can't connect to the server if the address in outlook is entered as mail.xyz.info for pop3s and mail.xyz.info for smtp. But if i straight away put xyz.info in both the fields of pop and smtp of outlook it works. please advice what is the correct method? (in the review configuration of sme server manager page it sgows pop smtp and imap server address as mail.servername then why doesn't it work?)

A SME server that is NOT configured to use "Internet DNS servers" (in server-manager::Configuration::Domains::Modify) will create DNS entries for ftp.xyz.com, mail.xyz.com, <servername>.xyz.com, proxy.xyz.com, wpad.xyz.com and www.xyz.com.

These names are ONLY available to your internal network.

Hosts on the Internet outside your local network will only be able to lookup the host names you have created at your DNS hosting provider.

The internal host names will not exist unless the specific domain in question is configured to "Resolve locally" (in server-manager::Configuration::Domains::Modify)

No.

If you want users on the internet to use mail.xyz.com you have to configure your Internet DNS servers - which are NOT your SME server - to return the address of your SME server when asked "where is mail.xyz.com"?

There is NOTHING to change on the SME server itself to affect the responses that will be received by the internet at large -- SME is NOT a public DNS server.
