Upgrading Diskand Version
« on: July 18, 2007, 06:11:45 AM »
This describes how an Version plus Disk upgrade went, a unique problem we had and the solution.
Task - Upgrading SME Server 6.01 to 7.1  and moving from a 40 GIG IDE drive to a new 160 GIG IDE drive.

The upgrade was done using the instructions at http://wiki.contribs.org/UpgradeDisk
Personal Opinion - the guys who did this work should be given an award for a most valuable tools for the administration of SME SERVER. We all know that hard drives die and the OS can change. As a preventative measure on a server that has been working for quite some time without any upgrades, we decided to change the drives to give the system a new lease on life. The above worked just about flawlessly.
Problem
In this small network after the upgrade, all but 4 of 13 computers the users could log in, c/w scripts.
On the the other 4 the users could not logon to the domain. One could have the machine be removed from the domain and be added back on again. After doing that we still had no luck getting the users logged on.
The users could however log on from a known good machine.
Most would say that it was in the workstation and not the server, and they are right.
What we tried
We thought it might be a local internal networking/ authentication problem so we
1. deleted the users profile from the machine - tried a login - no login
2. Removed the machine from the domain and Syspreped the machine - (factory seal)  - rejoined the domain - no logon yet
3. Removed the machine from the domain and renamed it to a different name - rejoined the domain - yeah! our users could login as normal - on all 4 machines.
Factoids - the four machines had been renamed on the 6.01 server just 1 week before the upgrade and they worked OK then , but did not make it through the upgrade process.
We broke the mirror on the verion 6.01 side and booted from one disk and did the upgrade from that. This gave us a role back position which we did use for a short time.
Finally
Don't know why the 4 machines did not allow the logins and why renaming them allowed it, but I thought it might help if it happens to anyone else.
Thanks
