Email configuration, Samba PDC question
« on: September 02, 1999, 05:04:48 PM »
Hi,

I'm wondering if this is possible with e-smith.

There are multiple mail-accounts(pop3) at multiple ISPs, I'd like e-smith to get that mail
(scheduled) and put it in the mailboxes of accounts defined on the e-smith machine.
When a user polls that mail via pop3 into for instance communicator and replies the replie
is sent to the smtp server on the e-smith machine which in turn forwards it to the
appropriate mailbox at the appropriate ISP.

To clarify, for the client machine the e-smith machine is the mailserver but that polls the
mail from other servers and forwards the mail sent to other servers.

Also,

the fileserver part of e-smith, is that Samba? if so, which version, can I use e-smith as a
PDC for Windows NT clients?

EMAIL: Hello Patrick, The e-smith server and gateway supports multidrop email, in which it fetches all email from a single POP3 account at a single ISP and puts it in separate mailboxes on the e-smith machine. If you need to fetch email from multiple ISP POP mailboxes, you'd have to customize it by modifying the "fetchmail" script (not difficult, but requires some Linux experience).  As far as sending email, that will work the way you describe, without modification.

SAMBA: Hi Patrick, The fileserver part of e-smith is indeed Samba (and also Netatalk for Macintosh file sharing).  e-smith 3.0 ships with Samba 2.0.5a-1. It is configured to work in a workgroup. If you need to use it as a PDC you'll have to customize the smb configuration file. (This is no more difficult than customizing it for any Linux system.)
