Preferred Mail Client
« on: August 26, 2007, 12:32:07 AM »
HI all
My work systems use full blown outlook and exchange (for our mobile push email etc) and i run a sme for my things. (very well i might add)
But i have to use outlook express in imap mode that i just cant get on with. WHen i delete things they dont go to a deleted mail folder (my ms pda does) and its slow and seems clunky (compared to outlook on exchange) so im assuming im either using the wrong client or im missing something damn obvious.

I cant use outlook with my sme as i need to be able to easy differentiaite between my email account, but i would like something a bit slicker. Any pointers people

Thanks James

IMAP messages get marked as deleted (with cross out lines), they don't get moved to a Deleted Items folder. There is a setting that will purge (delete) all deleted messages when you leave the folder
Tools/Options/Maintenance/Purge deleted messages when leaving IMAP folder

The sme server uses IMAP so therefore you can use any email client you want.

Why not, just create another IMAP account in Outlook, configured to look at your sme server, for your user account.

IMAP doesn't work that way, so I doubt that any IMAP client does that.

If you don't like Outlook Express, try Thunderbird.

ok guys thanks
Is there anyway when i press delete i can get the client to move them to my deleted items, or should i not use imap etc
I like to keep my deleted items as the might come in useful, then i manually delete the old ones.

I know your knowledge of IMAP is far better than mine but i assumed as i just press 'delete' on my smartphone that it moves them from inbox to deleted and that uses IMAP that i could get OE or another client to do this

Either way I know now i cant
Thanks for that

It was already suggested to try Thunderbird. This email client has options to "move message to Trash" folder when deleting which looks like to be what you want - just try Thunderbird and play with the options.

There is a replacement for OE if you are running Windows XP. Its Windows Live Mail Destop. It will move the deleted files to a configurable folder and does spam filtering to (unlike OE).
