Man do I feel stupid.
« on: March 23, 2002, 09:47:27 AM »
A few days ago I was freaking out because I wasn't able to get e-mail while having my linksys dsl/cable router hooked up and then all of a sudden I couldn't get anything.  Well, the reason I couldn't get anything was because my daughter must have pulled the plug on my SME box, it had no power.  I rebooted it, put it into server only mode and low and behold everything was working; not great but it was working.

By not great I am refering to the way it takes upwards of 30 seconds to authenticate to the e-mail service or for FTP access.  I've heard this is due to the auto bandwidth negotiation for 10/100.  I've also heard that the fix is to lock the nics at 100.  Anyone have any idea how to do this?  I tried playing with some software for my 3COM card and it caused more problems than it fixed.  Is this the only way or is there another way I'm not aware of?

Thanks for any help you can give.  Obviously I may not be a very bright bulb in the hardware store but I do learn in time.

Bye for now.

Hi Dave,

Maybe it's worth nothing but did you check out this one:
http://www.e-smith.org/bugs/index.php3?op=showBug&bugID=67

meaning what is the conent of your /etc/resolv.conf. It should read:
domain your.domain
nameserver 127.0.0.1

Also, is you esmith working as a server only ( i.e. the modem is port forwarding mail and ftp to it ? )  -  if so, try port forwarding the auth port ( 53 I think ) on udp aswell.

Or. Ports 1 to 500 portforward to your esmith box.
