Remote extension
« on: September 27, 2007, 07:26:31 PM »
Hi All,

I have setup a remote extension for my friend in Spain , it shows as connected on my server and he can ring my extension but when I answer there is no sound either way :-(  If I call him it goes straight to voicemail  :? I have setup a couple of others in the UK and they work OK, will the fact that he uses a router have any effect? I have never had to forward or open ports for x-lite before  :o Any help is appreciated

Yep, he will need to forward ports from his router to the pc running x-lite to get it working.

5060 for sip
and
10000-20000 for RTP

Hello Del,

Just out of interest, did you set the X-lite definition in SARK as being a remote phone?

Best

Yes, the funny thing is that it shows as connected in server-manager and even gives his correct IP  :-? I am now waiting for him to tell me what router he his using, I know that it is a Belkin ADSL2+ Modem router not the exact model yet  :-) But like I said in my opening post I have done this for a couple of my friends in the UK and had no problem, they are both using Linksys routers. My friend in Spain isn't that technical so I will have to send him instructions on how to forward ports, when I asked him what model his router was he replied with Belkin ADSL2+ Modem router  :D and of course there are quite a few of those on Belkins site  :-) Anyhow I will keep you informed of my progress, unless you can suggest anything else.

Regards,

Not really.  Setting the local/remote value to remote causes SARK to set asterisk up to do symmetric RTP and causes a heartbeat packet to be sent to the phone every few seconds.  In theory (and usually in practice) this will keep the far-end firewall pinhole open so that traffic can pass.  What will mess this up is if your friend is (knowingly or not) blocking outbound ports from his site (most "domestic" nat'ed routers don't do this by default but some of 'em are capable of being set up to).   I've also some across a few routers which can bugger up VoIP comms by having their own "SIP aware" mechanics which mangle the packet headers and end-up causing Asterisk untold grief in the process.

:-)
