« on: August 29, 2007, 04:18:54 AM »
I'm a linux newbie, trying to install GUI on Linux SME 7.2.  Have installed Gnome using server-manager.  But cannot get it to work.  Tried yum install Gnome yum group install "Gnome desktop Environment" but nothing works.  Really appreciate any urgent help.

to quote stuntshell

Search for gnome or kde and you'll find how-to's and opinions about running a GUI on a server.

A quick search on kde resulted in this

I'm a linux newbie, trying to install GUI on Linux SME 7.2.
smeserver is a SERVER distribution and NOT aimed at the desktop.

The GUI for administering the smeserver is a series of web pages accessible via http://<your domain>/server-manager

Why are you trying to load Gnome? What are you trying to achieve?

Maybe we can help you to achieve what you really want when we can understand your requirements....

I've got only one linux server where I want to install and test applications, view web pages and create it as a mailserver.  I'm used to windows but no knowldege with linux.  If it's got a gui then I can relate and better understand.  Tried obtaining Centos 4.5 cd and installing but no luck "Error getting repository data....." message.

Please really appreciate any help

ashbis,

You have some learning to do. This is a great distro, and is kind of designed to allow someone with no knowledge of linux to do basic administration.

SME does have a web interface that will give you some control, but to add some things you will have to use a command line interface.

Have you read the documentation? There is a wealth of knowledge there, and will answer many of your questions.

As far as being a mail server. that is already part of the package.

Read the docs, and then come back with questions. Be as specific as possible. The group here will help, but not necessarily do it for you.

I've got only one linux server where I want to install and test applications, view web pages and create it as a mailserver.
Then smeserver will do just that WITHOUT gnome... :)

As another post suggests, have a good look at the manuals (Link at the top) and then browse through the HowTos and Contribs to see what applications you are interested in installing (no direct link to the Contribs from here, but a link is available from the manuals or HowTo pages).

It really depends on what you want the server to do. Internet Gateway, mail (including spam & virus checking), webmail, file sharing etc. are all part of the basic setup with simple web-based configuration available. If the additional applications you want to host are webapps and they are available as contributions, you'll normally find that it is a simple install and they are available as well.

Again, re-iterating what was in the other post, read the manuals (Admin & User to start with), define what you want to do and if you need advice/help, just ask.

Good Luck

ashis,

"I" thought learning SME 7.X was going to be easy. There are features (as all who read the forums know) which should work right out of the box. Knowing absolutely nothing about Linux I dove in head first.

Webserver, Email, FTP, Spam & Virus Checking, File Sharing, Domain Controller for Windows Domains - with simple administration. The distro worked flawlessly out of the box until I wanted to add something or change settings. This is where it gets a little hairy.

The best way is to have a test box with SME on it and simply play with it. When it breaks check the forums to see if someone else has found the fix. If not your only a reload away from a running server again.

Document what your trying to do and the steps you took. Some day this will be invaluable to others! Most of all don't give up. Once you've written your first template and it works the magic all makes sense. The guys who develop this distro are the most knowledgeable you'll ever find! And their not afraid to help - in breaking things it helps them to discover new ways to make it unbreakable.

It's not easy - read the documentation at least three times! About the third time it all starts to make sense. Try installing something you find useful in the contribs and see if it works correctly. SME server is free for us to use but it's like everything else that's free - your going to have to spend time and energy at your expense to learn how it works by reading, experiencing and sharing with others.

Good luck,
Paul
