Im looking for a simple, quick, easy forum software to use with SME.

I have been using SMF (the forum software used here @ contribs in fact...) for over a year w/ no problems. To help installing it in /opt you might want to look at the SME Site Maker script.

I really like phpbb, it's very easy to use, and with this contrib (http://wiki.contribs.org/PhpBB) you'll have it up and running seriously before you know it  .

Josh - Wow - yes, as easy as falling off a log .... however ...

My problem is that I only want to run it locally, and phpBB seems to be very tied to my 'external' details. We also have our actual website hosted elsewhere and Im getting tripped up on authorisation issues.

I am guessing that I would need to change the config - but cant get into admin panel ...

So I'm guessing you have your server set to "private server and gateway"?
If you do, the forum should only be available to your LAN.

You're talking about the phpbb admin panel?  If so, it took me a little while to find where phpbb installed to, but it is in:
 
/opt/phpBB2

Looking back on this post, I seem a bit dis-jointed, but if you could provide some more details, eg. what you want to do with your forum/how you want it to be accessed (LAN, WAN, WEB, etc) I might be able to help.
