How not to have server act as DNS

How not to have server act as DNS
« on: March 28, 2002, 04:24:21 AM »
We have an enthusuatic and motivated user at one of our sites that wants to use SME as their web/mail server.

This is just fine, but we need tofit thsi into our existing network, we run our own DNS servers etc. etc.

Is there any way to prevent SME from acting as a DNS server itself? As far as Ican tell it always wants to install as the owner of it's domain.

I have to confess I haven't sat through the install with the user, but it seems that there is no way to adjust the dns behavior from any of the management screens. All we want is the system to act as a web/mail server in our existing domain and use our existing DNS servers.

Hope you can help.

Yours Peter

How are the clients getting dns address settings?
In the client tcpip settings is where you specify which dns server to use.  make sure that it's your dns server and not sme.

I bet  that you are letting sme act as your dhcp server as well.
turn off dhcp services on the sme.  (you need some other way to provide tcp/ip settings to your client machines)

Hi Peter,

This may or may not apply but here goes.

If you run through the server configuration screen, you can specify an uplevel DNS server. Perhaps you could put in the address of the DNS server you want to use in here which should make SME a downlevel DNS server to the one you specify.

Just my 2 cents.
