Sitemaker and Secure Webpages
« on: October 25, 2007, 07:27:23 AM »
Hi there Guys.

Firstly thanks for your superb commitment and a GREAT Product.

I need to Host a Couple of webpages on a SME 7.2 Box

I installed sitemaker ver2 and it works fine. I tried smeserver user webspace and that also works fine.

However I'm not sure if I must rather create and use an "ibay" to host the pages or use another method.

I Require STRONG Protection for these pages in the sense that the User that wishes to View the Pages must use a "user name and Password" to access the pages. I also require to have access to these pages over the Internet.

Any help greatly appreciated.   :)

Bud

Read the ibays section of the manual, it should all be covered there.

Hi there Bud.

I'm also new to SME, but I've tried to set up different i-bays for certain client info. I've set it up with security and it works well, but my problem is also that I have more than one client to access the info in the same i-bays - so I have to give the username and password for the i-bay to the different users, and that is not what I would like to do - because then I would not be able to have control over the users that logs into the i-bays for the information.

So I differ from the gay that says that you must use the i-bays info in the manual.

I would like to have the same info that you are looking for.

Maybe you can give me some advise on the Sitemaker and Secure  Webpages.  Silly question, Is that software that you installed on the SME server?

I'm using Vers 7.2.

What I've gathered is that I must make use of PHP and MySql, but I'm completely stupid in setting it up. I'm quite onnest.  Any help will help.

Good luck.

The ibay public / private access with password options will secure for a single username / password combination only, and this is related to opening the ibay or website itself.

In addition the use of .htaccess may be what you are wanting to search for - this offers finer control of the username and password options into the website.

Dependant on the content of the ibay there may then be different username and password combinations available - these will be managed by the software itself.

Generally I have found if the ibay is to hold a premade website which has builtin mysql based security then the ibay username and password can be problematic - ie you may get asked for it for different pages again.  In these cases I have found relying on the security in built in the software beneficial.   In these cases I have also used an excellent tip provided for redirection to https only.

Alternatively sitemaker will create website structures and access rights into the /opt directory as opposed to the ibay structure, so will use the security of the structure you give the opt directory and individual subdirectories themselves - ie folder ownership and modes...  Key here is to avoid advise that suggests a 777 mode - this is inherently insecure.

Another facet that may play a part is the access to the mysql permissions for the database for which the website is a front end.

All of these customisation are available and can be made to fine tune the security of your web content.  It can be very simple ranging to much finer control...  start by following the excellent advice from Ray - read http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter14

Then identify what you are trying to achieve (you could fire more detailed questions back into this thread and you will probably get more specific responses) and search on that aspect of security - such as the phrases in bold above.

Good luck.  Cheers, shell

Thanks for all the Info and Advise Guys.

I have Tried the ibay Route but as I need Multiple Users to Access Web Pages I am Opting for the Sitemaker Option with a Combination of .htaccess Security Features. I will give it a Go and then Post my Findings.

Thanks for the Quick Response and Help.

SME is Simply Great. I now use it for ALL my Clients needs.
