My server died; now what?
« on: November 05, 2007, 04:07:25 AM »
While I know SME can run on Intel and AMD, 32 or 64 bit; the problem I have is my system died tonight.  I had to install my old Linksys RV042 just to get the internet connection going again. :(  The power supply went out taking the battery backup with it.  Now I'm not sure if it's going to be worth it to try to just replace the power supply because if it took out the UPS then what did it take out on the motherboard, etc...

So what kind of system should I buy in order to drop my drives into and be able to "pick up where I left off"?  My now dead system is an Athlon 64.  Can I change over to something like an Intel Core 2 Duo without loosing my data?  If I just go with all new gear, can I pull the data off of my old system even if I go with a clean install?

Thankfully I can have a full day without it as no big deal.  I really will need to have it back up by Tuesday though.  Thanks for any input.

Sounds like quite an explosion...

You should be able to get anything that the old drive will work in.

If there are any hardware incompatibilities, just re-install 7.2 from the CD - it will sense the old installation and offer to upgrade it, recognizing new network cards in the process.

Or, get a whole new computer, install 7.2 from CD, then hook up the old drive and copy over the important parts (there are some discussions here on the forum that give more detail on what the important parts are...)
