Changing System Password
« on: February 11, 2008, 12:38:42 AM »
Hi,
New to SME Server and trying to change the password for the user called "admin".
To login to server-manager I use "admin" and a password I was given by my predecessor, to change the password for this user I am asked for a "system" password. I tried typing in the password I have for "admin" (the only one I have) but this is rejected.
I presume therefore that the "system" and "admin user" passwords are different beasts?
Cheers,

If I understand you correctly, the "admin" and the "root" password are the same. Assuming that you have "forgotten" the correct password, you need to reset it. There is an entry in the wiki detailing how to reset the password if you have console access, e.g. keyboard and screen directly attached to server. I have had to use it so I know that it works.

Thanks for the reply. No the admin password and root password are not both the same at the moment. I want to change the admin one so it is the same as the root one. I know both of the current passwords, but using them doesn't allow me to change the "admin" user password in server manager, it keeps telling me that "the current system password is incorrect"

So is there a third password known as the "system" password? (Which I was never given by my predecessor).

Thanks.

There is no 3rd password.
Do as has been suggested ie reset root & admin pw to be the same see

Thanks I'll give it a go.
I'll log a couple of bugs too, as the use of the word "system" instead of "admin" or "root"  in the message is confusing. Also you shouldn't be given the option of changing the admin password in the web page if you have to actually reboot the machine to do it as part of the boot-up sequence.
