Handling mailing lists

Hello All:

I'm getting familiar with e-smith 3.1 on a new isolated machine, which will become our gateway/email/web server as soon as our DSL access is completed in the next 3-4 weeks.  Until then, I want to plan and test as much as possible so the switchover is as simple and painless as possible.

Anyway, the question is:  How can I have mail lists sent to my email recipients get to them properly?  Some of my people get email via these lists, and in our current situation, I get all of them and have to re-direct them to each person - what a pain...

So - can e-smith 3.1 (or 4.x for that matter) solve this?  If not automatically, can it let me do it with some manual tweaking?

Thanks in advance from this newbie.

Are you using the multi-drop setup? This problem is inherent to all multi-drop configurations, no matter which email software you're using. If your ISP has their mail server configured to put the correct addressee for each message into a field such as X-Delivered-To then you can configure e-smith to look for this field, which will solve the problem. (Normally the true addressee information is discarded and the e-smith software has to guess the addressee information from the "To:" or other field.)

But a better solution is to use the standard configuration (if you have a static IP and dedicated internet connection) or the ETRN configuration (if you have a static IP and dial-on-demand connection).

Best regards,

As far as multi-drop or not, I'm not using ANYTHING yet (not via e-smith anyway).

When I start using e-smith, though, to handle our email, we'll be doing the email totally via e-smith using static IP addresses.

We'll have 6 IP addresses from our DSL provider that I expect we'll use as the web-server, email-server, and the others will be un-used.

So with e-smith handling the email completely, can we solve this problem of the mailing-lists?

In this configuration there will be no problem at all with mailing lists. Any email sent to your domain will be delivered over your dedicated connection directly to your e-smith server and dropped into the right mailbox.
