Considering SME 7.2 Installation on Gateway 6400 Server
« on: January 11, 2008, 12:54:20 AM »
Anyone out there using SME Server on a Gateway 6400 series server?

I have an old Gateway 6400 server I would like to set up as a file server at home.
This particular server has an ASUS CUR-DLS mainboard with Intel PIII-800 CPU and integrated SCSI host controller LSI/symbios 53C101-33 & Quantum SCSI harddrives.

I checked the forum and HCL lists as best as I could, no sign of Gateway servers.

Any comments and feedback welcomed, whether I should give it a try.

Thanks!

Hans

I found this post when I searched for your mobo, which seems to indicate that it would work.
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=18557.0

Also try http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:FAQ#Hardware_Compatibility_List

You should search for advice on hardware raid as i see a fair number of posts on that. There is lots of good help in here but there are some who get surly if they think you haven't searched the forums/wiki and bugs thoroughly enough.

People running at home on inferior hardware, not real servers but old desktops. One advantage of them is that hard disc space is cheap for ide drives, whereas scsi drives are expensive/small and home servers tend to accumulate pictures/movies and music. Multiply the number of kids you have by 20-30 gig.

You decide, it's a 20 minute install at most. What can go wrong

Thanks for the info.

I think I will give it a try. This server has 73 GB harddrives in it, so it should take care of things for the household.
It's an old box, but it still runs....my friend was going to going to E-cycle it, so I took it. Why dispose of a working machine?

Cheers,

Hans

Here's an update on my SME Server installation on a Gateway 6400 server:

I ran the installation and everything installed without a hitch. The server is up and running fine.

I did discover one of the two HDDs is not working properly (maybe that is why the box was headed for the E-cycling).

Very happy with SME Server, it was easy to work with for a Linux newbie like me. I am looking forward to familiarizing myself with the features of this server program.

Imciyntre: thanks for your advice...I now know more about this forum and where to look for things.

Regards,

Hans
