SME 7.3 USB Printer Problems
« on: January 08, 2008, 07:44:21 PM »
I just cannot seem to get my HP ColorLaser 2550 (USB) to work with the SME server or any of the Linux (Kubuntu Gutsy) clients on the LAN.

I have plugged the printer in and here is the relevant dmesg output:

usb 1-4: new high speed USB device using address 3
drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 3 if 0 alt 1 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x1C17

The lsusb output is here:

Bus 001 Device 003: ID 03f0:1c17 Hewlett-Packard Color LaserJet 2550l

I have installed the PrinterqueAdmin package, and cannot get a test page printed.  The printer will print a test page manually.

I have tried adding the printer both as the first and second USB printer with no joy.

When trying to access the printer from my various linux workstations, I likewise get no joy

The samba logs for the workstations all contain this entry:

lpr: error - unknown option 'b'!
[2008/01/08 09:24:27, 1] smbd/service.c:close_cnum(1230)
dave-desktop (172.16.2.2) closed connection to service ColorLaser

Google gives no insight.  Could anyone point me the right direction.

BTW the printer works fine locally on any and all of the work stations.

I put the axe down and got a few  hours of sleep and awoke to go through the yum log files only to find that one installed package had killed lprng.  A removal and reinstall got the everything working again.

Thanks to those of you who read this.
