i have setup vpn on mac osx and it connects fine but i am unable to access shares or access the server-manager. i can ping the servers ip address but not the server name. i am using dynamic dns to access the server. any ideas?

Try setting your primary DNS server to the INTERNAL IP of the SME server, same for WINS if you have that setting on MAC OS.

You could also put a static entry for the SME server in your HOSTS file, it should be in /etc/hosts but not being a MAC person I'm not sure.
