Automount multiple sata hd in the same place for backup
« on: November 06, 2007, 10:42:18 AM »
ok,

this topic follows this one : http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=38981.0 that ended on the fact that this solution (case + 2.5" sata HD) :

case with dock   : http://www.lesnumeriques.com/article-351-2264-254.html
case alone         : http://www.materiel.net/ctl/Boitiers_externes/31065-IB_266STUS_B.html

was really going to be cheaper.

My problem now is to install this properly into a sme server. As i'm going to get a certain number of HD to assume a daily backup, i want all those HD's to (auto)mount in the same place once inserted into the rack. When using affa or backuppc you have to give an emplacement  for your backup, and i want it to go each time into the HD that will be in the rack, and each day will be a different HD.
It seems that a UDEV should do the job, but as i'm going to get not only one HD i want to know if you can get an UUID from the sata port and not from the HD letting us mounting for example any HD connected to the sata port of the rack always in the same place.

Any idea?  :D

There is a method described here for USB disks that should work: http://wiki.contribs.org/USBDisks#The_Solution

Basically, label each disk then modify /etc/fstab to mount disks based on their label.

Is this methodology could be applied to sata drives?

well, if it seems not possible to go through sata then i could always jump back to this solution from icydock (just USB external and internal): http://www.materiel.net/ctl/Boitiers_externes/32383-MB_663UR_1S.html

There is really nothing USB specific about the instructions for 'USBDisks' - that's just what I had for testing.

Everything in that HowTo should apply to any removable media.

Ok that's logic in fact.

Anyway, sata hot swap seems to be problematic on most hardware. USB seems for this to be natively done for hotplug.

disk labeling is independent of the actual drive types, and will work on anything that can be formatted with linux file systems :)

Why do you say SATA hot swap drives are problematic?

Why do you say SATA hot swap drives are problematic?

SATA hardware can support hot swap. However, the current SME kernel cannot.

But, there is a possible work-around (if you adhere to a specific set of constraints) as described in my post here http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=34197.msg148046#msg148046 (I also use the LABEL feature to solve the problem described in the original post.)

Hope this helps.
