OK I am sorta new to linux, SME, and just about anything linux. The Big penguin used to scare me a little.. I was a windows fanatic. (sounds like standing in front of a room, "Hi i'm dave, and i am an internet junkie!" , Never happened i swear!) But now that I want to do more with the web then just surf webpages, or make them for that matter. I want to do a few things..  keep in mind, I have SME installed right now on a 2.0 ghz computer with 1gig of ram.

==> List starts here

  • Web server (what attracted me to SME first)
  • SSH Shell server (for those needing MIRC bots, i would have Shells for that.)
  • EMail server
  • Web hosting (addons or other stuff, something that can automate the process of making the account, setting up thier account, creating mysql databases if needed.
  • Ability to access all this from a secure webpage, or secure control panel.

==> List Ends

I know, short list, but thiers alot in there. I just want to know if SME can handle all of this. Now, you have to imagine, the smallest budget in the world. And that is about what I am working with.

This is a personal server, that I have had Xampp running on, but decided to go whole hog and get into linux.  I will be eventually hosting websites, and renting out server space. but not untill I can figure all this out.

Basically, I need a server that can run well, and the functionality of a webhost website. What would I need, can SME work?

Looking forward to input!!

Thanks

It does what you are asking quite well. And It can do more. I strongly advise reading the documentation a few times, and trying it on a test setup. I am personally running it as a web server with about 20 do so domains, and as an email server.

If you think you know whats going on, you obviously have no idea whats going on!

If was looking to set up a mini web host I think I would be looking at ISPconfig. Set up guides can be found at howto forge.

William

IF I give advise.. It's only if it was me....

Why? What do you see as the advantages?

I have not tested ISPConfig, but some other web service provider systems and SME server for some years.

I will guess that the main difference is that the SME server is buildt as a gateway server for a small or medium size enterprice.

One part of this consept is that configuration and maintenance is best performed from lan and by using one common admin acount.

The SME server is by default not designed (as I see it) to run on a web farm, using multible admin or user/admin accounts with remote access via Internett. The SME server is by design not a web hotel, but a enterprice gateway server.

If you are the only admin and it is running on a place from where you will have console access, the SME server will do the job.

If you will run the server on a server farm with multible user/admin acounts and remote access only, other alternatives might be considered.
