Vista Issues
« on: February 18, 2008, 03:14:16 AM »
Hi guys.

I purchased a copy of Microsoft Vista Business so I could test how well this new OS works with my beloved SME Server 7.3.  I ran into two issues and I wonder if anyone has experienced the same things.  I don't if these issues classify as bugs as they are more issues with vista rather than SME.
  • I have set up my server to automatically provide printer drivers to clients as per instructions here - http://wiki.contribs.org/Printer_Drivers_for_Windows_Workstations but so far my clients can't connect.  Anyone experience the same issues?
  • I have the smeserver-loginscript contrib installed.  Works a treat for XP, but won't even map home drives on vista workstations.  Anyone running Vista and SME Server with this contrib?
Vista lasted about two hours on my notebook before I reformatted and reinstalled XP.  I think Vista is greatest opportunity desktop Linux has ever had.  What a horrible operating system!

I'm no fan of Vista, I assure you, but it's here and IT support will have to deal with it.  I'm hoping that SP1 will address many of the issues that have come up in the year-plus since Vista was inflicted upon us.  Fortunately I've not (so far) had to support Vista authenticating to SME Server.  Most of my business clients are avoiding Vista and buying new PCs from Dell and HP with XP, or getting Vista and then paying me to remove that and install XP.  Home users are taking Vista up as they buy new computers, but I've removed a few Vista installs from home computers also.

If you have enough RAM (2 gigs+) and a superfast multicore processor Vista runs reasonably well, and I'm getting used to the many small changes from XP.  Some are clearly "make-work" ... why oh why do you now change the workgroup from the "System" control panel applet?

Yep, it's bad!  But here to stay due to Microsoft's business practices.  We just need to make sure that SME and Vista play as well together as SME and XP.  I will continue to report problems with SME/Vista as they come up.

I must be the exception to the rule.

I am able to browse network shares, just like I can I can on my XP laptop and my win2000 desktop.
My username on both laptops and SME is exactly the same. I can access data on the sme server from all the machines with no issues.

Up until 3 weeks ago I did not have any issues with a laptop running Vista Premium. The only issue I have that showed up about 3 weeks ago is that for some reason if I try to transfer large files they now dont complete. I can play avi stored on the SME server and burn them to cd/dvd from the sme server but when I try to transfer them to the laptop the dont complete.

I am talking about issues related to domain membership.  So there is no local user with the same user name and password as a user on the server, just the netwok user on the server logging in.  Lots of issues.
