Newbie question
« on: April 16, 2002, 07:13:36 PM »
Hi

I have installed SME 5.1 as a server only installation, using a Compaq 808 router to connect a LAN of 30 pcs to the internet. At the moment, all is working well. The server is used for file sharing and printing too.My question is - how do I block access to web sites - ie porn sites - can it be done on the server or is it the router that handles it? I have checked the router doc and cant see any mention of this facility.

Thanks in advance

Use squidGuard

The e-smith's blocking capabilities only work when it's acting as the gateway (when all of the LAN's internet traffic passes through the e-smith). If you've got the e-smith in server-only mode and a separate router, the e-smith has nothing to do with the PCs' internet connections.

How do you configure the blocking capabilities in gateway mode?

I seem to have hit on something here, guys! In reply to Bill, if I "redirect" the pcs to point to the server as a proxy server, and then send the server to the router - hope this makes sense - then I should be able to filter the URL's, no? Will this significantly slow down my network?

thanks

Yes, you will be able to filter the URLs that way. As for using a filter just make sure you have enough ram and you'll be fine.

Is there a specific reason you have for using the router at all?  SME in server/gateway mode makes for an excellent router without the extra hardware/miles.

Also, many people have contributed excellent how-tos and a lot of rpms - accessible by the home page, on the right: Contributed How-Tos and RPMS.
