Migrate from smaller harddisk to bigger, SME 7.3
« on: April 04, 2008, 08:06:48 PM »
Hi,

since I'm using the server more and more for torrents, documents etc, I want to change from my current 80 Gb  disk (A)to a 200 Gb (B) disk. The casing of the computer can only handle 1 disk, so I want to transfer everything from the old to the new harddisk.

I used www.clonezilla.org to copy A to B, including GRUB
Booted up from B, first section OK until a stop at checking for errors on /dev/md1
After unnumerous attempts via e2fsck, I deleted the /dev/md1 from /etc/fstab

Now the system boots up, (of course with some errors), but the partition is exactly the same size as A drive.

Can anybody explain if it is possible to do what I want, and if so, a short how-to.

Thanks in advance,

Frank

Thanks, I already found that link, but the line
Quote
These instructions should work for any raid level you have as long as you have >= 2 drives
was misinterpreted by me I'm afraid. Thought I needed an existing set of 2 drives or more to be able to perform this sequence. Will try to get it working tomorrow.

System is now up and running with both harddisks in sync.

When I remove the original disk, and try to boot up the server again the new disk can't boot-up, since it's hanging in the GRUB? How can I repair GRUB ? Can I copy it from the original disk?

Are you sure your waiting till the sync has completed ? I've not encountered this and have done this myself a few times.

Unfortunately, YES.

Problem now has evolved since I tried typing GRUB at the command prompt. Now the server won't boot again from the original disk at all, it boots into GRUB text mode. HELP !!!!

OK. server is up and running again, after a repair of GRUB. I will try the second (new) harddisk when I've got some sleep  ;)
