problem with admin account
« on: April 08, 2008, 09:04:12 PM »
This is an odd problem, I'm hoping someone may be able to suggest a solution.

I have a client who is moving to SME Server for both a file server and a gateway. Everything is going well, but there is one problem that I have no idea how to get round. They have an email address of 'admin'. While they will eventually move to another name, the admin address is currently in use.

Is there a way to filter incoming mail addressed to 'admin@domain.xxx' to another email address? I don't want the normal users to have to access the real admin account, but they need to be able to access the incoming mail. I also don't especially need them to see all the system generated messages which go to the admin address.

Any suggestions gratefully received - I have no idea how to tackle this one!

Setup the new server with a domain name that is different to their real domain name (it can be a free domain name as it's only temporary).
Then add their real domain name as a virtual domain in Domains panel.
Then add a pseudonym for
admin@realvirtualdomain

Note that system type admin mail will go to admin@maindomain
and be delivered according to how you set up the admin user account for mail forwarding.

When they have stopped using the admin email address, then Reconfigure the server so the main domain is the real domain, and remove the virtual domain & pseudonym.

Thanks for the suggestion. That looks as though it should do what I need.

:D I guess I'll have to go back and read the docs some more....
