External DNS
« on: April 17, 2008, 05:18:11 PM »
Hi:

I am curious about what DNS servers SME Server uses for internet DNS? Does it use the DNS from my router? I am not issuing Dynamic IP to SMEServer, so I am not sure where it would be getting the DNS server information from.

If SME Server is using a designated DNS server (assigned by someone in the dev team), how do I change to a DNS provider that I want to use?

Thanks for your help.

Glenn

I am curious about what DNS servers SME Server uses for internet DNS?

SME server includes its own DNS resolver - by default it doesn't use another resolver, such as the one which might be provided by your ISP or your router. The DNS resolver (dnscache) directly uses DNS information provided via the various delegated servers located around the Internet, starting with the DNS root servers.

What problem are you trying to solve?

Thanks for the quick reply Charlie:

You Said: What problem are you trying to solve?

I would like to use OpenDNS as their services seem to make sense (and it is free, I like free :-). I already use Dansguardian but to have an extra layer of "can't go there" especially for phishing sites. I don't plan to use their web blocking portion of the service though since Dans is working nicely now.

Anyway, that is what I want to do.... any thoughts?

Thanks
