phpmyadmin and mcrypt
«

I just did a fresh install and update of sme 7.3 inside of vmware. I tried to install phpmyadmin contrib using
http://wiki.contribs.org/Phpmyadminmulti
Everything seemed to go ok but when I start phpmyadmin I get the following at the bottom of the home screen;
Cannot load mcrypt extension. Please check your PHP configuration.
I checked the phpmyadmin wiki but could not find anything.
I found this posting in the SME forums;
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=31607.0
The links are dead and the information is dated.
I found this but it is not exactly a model of clarity;
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=40544.0
Does anybody else get this error? and is there a successful work around?
edit
Found this post and got to the very end and found that it apparently doesn't matter
http://forums.contribs.org/index.php?topic=34362.45
Sorry for wasting electrons in such a flagrant manner; now what was I working on...
Thanks in advance for your help.
