Recover/restore deleted user data
« on: May 02, 2008, 02:14:58 PM »
Hi,

I have been asked to try and recover some data for a user account that was removed then recreated.  The quota page shows approx 4.5Gb in use for the recreated account, however when mapping to the user share (from within Windows), the folder is empty.  I have the following questions:

1.  Is this data actually lost, contrary to quota page info?
2.  If it is still available, where would I find it?  I have looked in home/e-smith/files/users/<username>, but this folder is empty.
3.  Will I need to re-apply permissions (does the OS use SID's like Windows does)?

Apologies if I have not provided enough info...my knowledge of Unix/Linux is very limited.  Please advise if you require any clarification or further information.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Chris.

hi

from your words I guess you have no backup

unfortunately, without a backup, recovering data is not possible.

if the fs is ext2 then the only way you COULD recover something is using a forensic analisys tool.

Stefano

That is possibly related to files that are in ibays, that were created or owned by the user.
