Printing PDF files to network attached Samsung 6060N
« on: April 26, 2002, 04:00:43 AM »
Hi,

I have just set up my first SME 5.1.2 (Server only) and am having problems printing PDF files to my Samsung 6060N (not postscript) printer from Windows clients on the LAN.  I have been searching the web for info on this and am now thoroughly confused!

Do I need to upgrade my printer with some form of PS support?
Can I use Ghostscript?  If so, how might I install this? - Newbie alert - :)
What are a2ps and Foomatic?
Is there another method as I see that Samsung seem to have Linux drivers for their printers at:
http://www.samsungelectronics.com/printer/linux_driver/linux_index.html
all 40mb of it!

At present, this is my major stumbling block - but other than that WOW! Wish I'd found e-smith sooner...

Regards

You shouldn't need any kind of PS support on the printer (I don't have any on mine, and it works fine).  Does it print other things OK?  How about the windows test page?  How is it connected to the server?

The general idea is that you set up your windows clients for your printer (in this case, a Samsung 6060N) using a network connection.  This means that all the drivers are installed on the client machines, and the server just passes raw data to the printer.  The server doesn't need any drivers for the printer.

The Windows machines can print other things (Windows test page, Word docs etc) fine.  It just seems to be PDF files...

The printer has a network interface and has an IP address which I have used when setting up the network printer on the e-smith server.  It would appear that there is something in the format of the PDF files (I have tried many) that is lost in RAW format (?)

BTW, Just followed your HOWTO for the IMP upgrade...  Thanks

I don't know if this is of any help but....

I have 3 Lexmark Optra T610 PS3 laser printers hooked up to my LAN and those are being shared via SME 5.1.2. I simply set them up as RAW and loaded the Windoze drivers on the client PCs. Some applications printed fine, others did not (i.e. web pages from Internet explorer). The output I got looked like raw postscript that was causing the printer to freak. In my instance, changing the way the postscript was sent via the client from Tagged Binary to ASCII solved the problem. Of course this is an option in the Lexmark driver, and my printer is postscript. I would check the client driver and see if there are any options along the same lines for PCL (if that is what you are using).

Just my two cents...YMMV

OK,

I have now played around a bit more and do I feel a fool...  When the PDF print dialog comes up, there is a nice little check box to "Print as image" - Guess what happens if I use that?  Yep, prints out fine...  bit slow, but fine.

Sorry to have caused any confusion and thanks for all the help.
