a wish on the newer developments with sme server
« on: June 04, 2008, 11:40:31 PM »
i feel it would be better if more packages came built into the server.
a simple example would be user-panels.
there are many others.
maybe there can be two distros.
one basic distro and one enhance distro.
it would make it so much easier for people such as myself to have some of the management
addons and some of the more useful addons already installed.
i figure most of the users of sme server are not that technically inclined with linux and also it
solved a problem of whether the addon was compatible for certain versions.
i believe many more people would start using it, if it where more friendly on the install side where the
admin did not have to learn all the technical parts of installing software addons.

you people are doing a good job but i believe this extra step would really be helpful to the users of sme.

hi

what's wrong with
Code: [Select]
yum --enablerepo=smecontribs install nameofcontrib
?

Ciao
Stefano

P.S. you say "most of the users of sme server are not that technically inclined with linux".. well, IMHO if you (generally speaking) wish to setup a server for a school, for a customer.. for work, you SHOULD know what you are doing.. otherwise we are acting as some M$ sysadmin... Next -> Next -> Next -> Finish.. such as stupid monkeys :-)

The development resources are very limited, as the main dev team consists of just over a handfull of people. Goal of SME Server is to provide basic server functionality for small enterprises. Additional contribs are written seperately, but could be added to the base if there is a good motivation for it and it is of general use to a lot of the users. Your best bet is to put this as a New Feature Request in the bugtracker instead of posting it in the forums, as it is more likely to not be lost.

i figure most of the users of sme server are not that technically inclined with linux and also it

You do not need to do so, this is done automatically by the software installer.

i believe many more people would start using it, if it where more friendly on the install side where the
admin did not have to learn all the technical parts of installing software addons.
You have the server manager, where you can enable (for the time you want to install a contrib, do not leave it enabled) the sme contribs repository, handpick the packages you would like to install, if you do not want to use the SME Server shell, but IMHO most of the contribs install pretty easily with afew simple instructions as the wiki pages are pretty well written and contain a source of information.

you people are doing a good job but i believe this extra step would really be helpful to the users of sme.
Like said the development resources are very limited, if you can not program, there a plenty other things to do, like writing documentation or if you really have no skills what so ever, which I doubt, you could also sponsor development and resources financially by donating to the community. If we were to raise a sufficient amount so the core devs could live of it they might be tempted to invest more time and quit their day jobs, as most development is done in their spare time.

No, you haven't. But you could help if you joined the Documentation Team and started to work on some of the things which you think need to be done. Or if you paid someone else to do those things.

thanks cactus for replying
i have contributed funds in the past, i have no problem with that and it is time for me to do so again.
all the comments you made i fully understand.

i am use to a command line but after reading linux books i am not that much further along.
i am using the sme server as like you said a server.
it is those functions to administer a server that i would like to see in the product most.
i do not know how much time it takes to place, i guess about 9 additional addons, to the distro that help in the distro.
in using the distro, it is much easier to remove an addon then to add it
if it is hard for the development team to easily added it, then you can believe it is harder for me.
also unless i am mistaken, there have been changes to how and where these addons come from, so the usefulness of installing
an addon is much less depreciated.

i am going to look at some of the options maybe i over looked for adding on.

creating a server from the distro is usually easy if the installer has reasonable compatible equipment.
i will never complain there, pat yourself on the back and on others backs as well for me.
i very well understand the commitment and sacrifice of the team.

i am not sure about the rights of addon from other users, but if that is a problem in installing on a distro, place their addons on another page of the contribs or make some notes beside their listing on that one page that shows addons.

i also feel more comfortable about addons being compitable with a distro, so i am very leary to do a addon on a working server.

i still believe if many more addons where on the distro, it would increase the popularity of the sme server and i would also hope that
more funds became available.

many thanks
paul

CharlieBrady is correct the dev's do this all in there spare time don't forget they have family and friends as well money would help them a lot more
tell me if i am wrong the idea is to keep SME learn and fast no source code no compliers to keep it secure trying running say mandriva linux on a lower end system that SME can run well on it is the best around some people shy away from the template system but once you understand it
it is way cool system i work for a company that does not like change redhat centos only even if you explain it to them people can be stick in the mud when it comes to change but if you show it to them show the system running how email anti virus VPN samba is already setup you only need to put your settings in people do change there minds i have used SME back when it was e-smith version 4.x mitel don't even sell it any more which i don't know why
but 1000 out of 10 to the dev's for sme server
