max cpu cores
« on: June 13, 2008, 06:41:32 AM »
I have several very specific questions about SME but i will ask them one at a time. the first one is what the maximum number of cores SME can address / use. I am looking at getting  several 32 core systems ( 8 cpus with 4 cores in each ). If SME cant use all the cores, i will either scale back the hardware and get more servers or find a different distro to go with. But, i have been impressed with SME so far.

Why? What are all those CPUs going to be doing most of the time? My SME server spends most of its day waiting for packets to arrive on the network, or waiting for data to be provided by disk drives.

32 cores are supported per Centos 4.x information. I also wonder how many thousands or millions of users you intend to support.

well, it will be running mysql and a multithreaded service that checks content against other content ( for authenticity ) in real time (hopefully). I can give you a breakdown of what will be happening.

each story will be checked against every other story in real time with each chapter being broken into 3 to 254 word strings and then compared to every other chapter of every other story which will be broken down into 3 to 254 word strings. the algorithm assigns a point value to word chain matches and word pattern matches while ignoring sentences that pass a templates check ( for common sentences ).

also, i will be getting a very hefty raid system to accomodate this so no worries there. plus tons of ram and memory tables to speed story processing up.

In here I read nothing you need for SME Server. The goal of SME Server is to provide a platform that can be used for a small business enterprise as a web, file and mail server.
Your workload seems to be of some other kind, and does not seem to require such functionality. I suggest you install a minimal required installation of a linux distribution of choice (but I suggest something like CentOS 5 perhaps) as you story does not indicate a need for SME Server, in which case I consider having a mail server, spam fighting features and a web server overhead.

What is your goal? Receiving stories and checking for authenticity, do you really need to do that real-time?

I was going to use SME server on the data cluster becuase thats what the web and email servers have on them. I didn't want to intermingle linux version in one environment for one task: serving up a highly data driven website and email for a few thousand people.

and the real time requirement is from the client, not me. i flat out told them that doing stuff in real time at a minimum increases hardware costs 6 times.

also, i have a SME 7.X VM running my personal web site running on a server in my house. I thought it was pretty slick. Then again, i get maybe 1 visitor a day. oddly enough, i have the VM down while building two development environments for my employer (from a dd) ... plus win2k3 is running, plus 3 product testing simulations.... VMware server can bring even the most hearty servers to their knees and get for mercy. I wont be using VMs for this client though.

so, CentOS 5 is more up the the task(s) i described? I will build a VM and see if there are any major or minor administration differences. although very off topic, both SME and CentOS support webmin, right?

SME Server - No (search here for answer(s) as to why no)

CentOS - Yes
