needing help to understand esmtp please
« on: June 14, 2008, 01:42:16 AM »
We have a FORTIGATE internet appliance in front of a SME 6.x Server.
The FORTIGATE filters SPAM om smtp / pop etc.

I sent some mail headers to the tech at FORTIGATE, he says that it looks to him like the SMEServer is using encryption when it can, and their filter can't filter ESMTP.

Here is example of one header using ESMTP, and another that says just SMTP.

by nebula7653.willcraft.com (192.168.55.1) with ESMTP; 09 Jun 2008 22:51:47 -0000

Received: from s142-179-207-221.ab.hsia.telus.net (HELO aplusmachining.com) (142.179.207.221)
by nebula7653.willcraft.com (192.168.55.1) with SMTP; 13 Jun 2008 13:32:01 -0000

He asked me if there was a way we could set the SMEServer to only accept SMTP.
Is that possible?
Thanks,

ESMTP is not encrypted SMTP, it is just Extended (or sometimes called Enhanced) SMTP, ESMTP is a protocol used by software to send e-mail that supports graphics and other attachments.

More information can be found on the net, for instance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ESMTP or http://searchexchange.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid43_gci296370,00.html .

If Fortigate know so little about SMTP, then I really wonder how good their appliance is.

If their applianace says "HELO appliance.domain.name" then SME will reply using pure SMTP syntax. If their appliance says "EHLO appliance.domain.name" then SME will reply using ESMTP syntax. This is standard behaviour. Google for "ESMTP RFC" and you, and they, can read all the details.

Why are you still using SME 6.x?
